New Moon in Capricorn: Astrology of 1/2 – 1/8

Astrology is an art we can turn to to ask the question of why are we here, and to gain mythological perspectives on our path or the moment we find ourselves in as a collective. This week a New Moon in Capricorn forms between the building conjunction of Saturn and Pluto in Capricorn – creating a window in which we begin to receive personal intuitions about how we belong to the whole and what responsibility we have within the ecology that we belong to. I would like to invite us to consider that waking up to our purpose and our role in the evolution of the planet is a transformation! It will draw new skillsets out of us. We will confront what doesn’t seem to be working as well as discover what foundations and roots do support us.

I would also like to invite us to consider a definition of miracles as according to A Course in Miracles, which is a shift in perception from fear to love. What guards are posted at this gate? What burdens, grievances, grudges, or dismal viewpoints stand at this gate? While life itself can nudge our hearts open through positive events and acts of kindness, we too can make these transformations in our inner-worlds, radiate the miraculous changes, and watch the outer-world change as well.

My next course is an Evolutionary Astrology intensive beginning January 20 – this is your opportunity to learn the language of Evolutionary Astrology with me, and to be empowered by this amazing body of knowledge. You’ll learn the foundational archetypes and vocabulary to begin to be able to perceive transits and interpret natal charts for yourself. Evolutionary Astrology is a soul-focused astrology that contains tools to analyze a chart from the perspective of the soul. (For a natal chart, it’s the individual soul, and for transits we can consider the world soul.) We gain actual insights on the nature of a soul and its past, as well as what a soul is learning in this lifetime. When you start to pay attention to your soul, it will dialogue back with you. It is so very valuable to have a relationship to this deeper part of us, and I would like to share Evolutionary Astrology with you as a gateway to discovering your power, growing into more aliveness, and healing yourself and the planet as you step into your authenticity and purpose. You’ll be joining a community of other amazing beings who are answering the same call! Learn more about the course and enroll here. Note payment plans are available, please email sabrina@monarchastrology.com to inquire.

Are you new here? Be sure to sign up for my mailing list to stay in the loop. You’ll receive the weekly forecasts, and special subscriber-only content as I write additional articles for specific transits. You’ll also get to stay updated about upcoming courses, events, and a podcast that is soon to launch!

Here’s our week:

January 3, 2019

Mercury in 28 Sagittarius trine Uranus in 28 Aries: 10:12 PM PDT

  • This is a time where we can be accessing ideas that expand us and increase our freedom. It is possible for us to see through some of our normal mind chatter and see it for the stories that underly specific scenarios, like “I don’t feel taken care of” or “I don’t feel loved”. These can be traced down to beliefs as well like, “I don’t believe the Universe is taking care of me,” or “I don’t believe I’m unconditionally deserving of love.” If we shift these core beliefs we access new realities. See if your thoughts more readily reveal stories and beliefs at this time and what creative agency you possess to revise these stories.

Sun in 14 Capricorn sextile Neptune in 14 Pisces: 12:57 PM PDT

  • It’s very beautiful when Capricorn and Pisces energies work together – I think of it like an engineer who has a dream that they plot out into reality. We can materialize our dreams.

  • A trickier way that Capricorn and Pisces interacts together can be delusional forms of cynicism – feeling that something that is possible is not possible and feeling defeated over it. Sometimes feeling defeated, however, gives way to forms of surrender that make way for new truths and insights. You have probably had the experience of a situation loosening up or getting what you wanted right after you gave up/surrendered.

  • This transit highlights the subtle gifts and tensions of the relationship between our fantasy/dream life and the concrete parameters of physical and circumstantial reality. With the Sun in Capricorn, our creativity might be directed toward building structures or containers which support a manifestation process. Think to what systems or structures, when put in place, would increase harmony and flow in your life.

Mercury enters Capricorn: 8:40 PM PDT

Mercury will stay in Capricorn until January 23.

  • We might see our mental faculties becoming more calculated – such as assessing and analyzing risk, or imagining plans and how we might sequence the execution of those plans.

  • Our minds might become more narrow – which could either be a form of focusing on a task and having grounded attention with the process, or it could be a form of thinking that things are just going to be a certain way, like “this is just the way it is”.

  • We and others may become more careful about our speech, tending to speak when we feel ready or when we feel an idea is fully crystallized, or wherever we feel we are in touch with our authority. As with Capricorn in general, this runs on a spectrum of fear-based inhibition to wisdom/awareness of proper timing.

  • As our minds become more careful, deliberate, narrower, denser — see if you can tend to what is crystallizing. You might become more aware of obstacles, but these obstacles and how you choose to interact with them, forge your intelligence.

  • Mercury is very clever and agile, able to see a variety of perspectives. Mercury is connected to the trickster, and one of the trickster’s jobs is to show people a new reality beyond the one they have become accustomed to. Capricorn is an archetype where we meet, address, are influenced by, and shape reality. When Mercury is in Capricorn we have an opportunity to become more flexible and clever about how it is we perceive boundaries and limitations (whether they be real or imagined). It is also an opportunity to become more lucid around how structures, boundaries, and limitations can support us, and how to interact with structure in a way that is deeply supportive rather than restrictive.

New Moon in 15 Capricorn: 6:28 PM PDT

(Image: Peter Haars)

Remember the New Moon is when the Sun and Moon are conjunct – the Sun and Moon are both in 15 degrees Capricorn. This New Moon is sandwiched between Saturn in Capricorn and Pluto in Capricorn – a conjunction that is currently in orb and active, though it does not exact until 2020. This New Moon presents opportunities to feel the meaning of the Saturn-Pluto conjunction in our personal experience and emotional bodies. The New Moon is also sextile visionary force Neptune in Pisces.

  • A major teaching coming through this moment may be the realization (or the deepening of the realization) that because everything is connected, there is no separation between the individual and the world, or the personal and the collective, or the personal and the political.

  • As cultural historian and astrologer Rick Tarnas outlines in the truly magnificent epilogue of Passion of the Western Mind (you can read it online here), the early pre-modern human was more connected to the earth, to enchantment, and to things like spirits and omens. The human individuated in the Age of Enlightenment. Through scientific developments, the human gained a capacity to differentiate itself from the nature-womb it had been immersed in. This gave the human significant freedom and allowed us to develop in certain ways. It also gave rise to certain cultural pathologies and the ways that we have objectified the earth. Tarnas suggests that the next phase of this process is the re-integration, where the human once again realizes its relationship to the earth and to the cosmos. This relationship can now be deeper and more intelligent because of the differentiation process we’ve been through.

  • In philosophies of Ecosexuality, it has also been said that the human is ready to relate to the earth as Lover instead of Mother. (See Ecosexuality: When Nature Inspires the Arts of Love.)

  • While this is a collective process that is unfolding – an actual transformation of how the human relates to the ecosystem, and how we structure our realities and governments accordingly – this is also a process that every person is taking on in their own individualized way, and I’d like to suggest that we sit with the gravity of that for a moment, and feel our unique value in this process simply for that we exist in this time period.

  • Any collective feelings of dread or fear for the future at this major moment of evolution can be transmuted through the individual showing up to reality in the best way they can, and groups of individuals showing up to reality in the best ways they can. If society is going to evolve, we have to evolve.

  • In Inward, a beautiful book of poetry by yung pueblo, there is a general thesis/message that individual transformation and healing IS collective healing. The author is involved with activism and meditation. I’m dropping the book here because I think it’s a beautiful book to explore if you want more ideas in your consciousness around how individual healing is connected to global healing.

  • There is so much shame and guilt on the planet and conditioned into our consciousness which doesn’t help this process at all – if we are very concerned about the state of the world or all of the problems of the world that need our help, it becomes possible for people to self-deny while turning themselves outward.

  • Instead of being self-absorbed or being self-denying, we are needing to learn how to view ourselves as ecological beings and to discover how we want to participate in reality from that place. We are discovering how our inner-world is a space from which our outer experiences, with others and in the world, are sourced from, and why in turn that relationship is so important.

  • Meeting the challenges that would allow us to survive, evolve and thrive as a human species is both a collective effort and an inside job. While there are plenty of hacks that make this process more efficient, this also calls for complexity and it’s like we’re being forced to evolve.

  • We may feel (some of us or at varying times) pressure. This pressure can be a signal that we are developing – we are integrating massive themes. It can also be a pressure to step up and become a leader wherever it is we have natural authority or have honed a skill.

  • A particularly complexity of consciousness I would like to name in prayer for us is the ability to participate in reality and to be able to address what is heartbreaking, where there is suffering – with a heart that continues to connect to and emanate joy and love. We do not need to hide from pain or the shadow or the collective shadow, nor do we need to be overcome by it. We are growing by interacting with difficulties from a place of profound love.

  • May we also trust the process of vacillating between moving inward and outward (private space, healing, internal work <—> participating in the world and working and healing with others), trusting in intuitive timing, trusting that the two spheres are inextricably connected.

Uranus stations direct in 28 Aries: 1:26 PM PDT

Uranus will move back into Taurus in March of this year, and will not retrograde back into Aries again.

  • Planetary stations heighten the energy of the planet, and we become more likely this week to experience Uranian themes. Uranus in Aries brings us in touch with some of the following: a sense of urgency in beginning or starting anew; a desire/call to shake things up without having a full vision of what is to come; youthful idealism; accelerated development of courage or the realization of a personal mission.

  • Uranus’ retrograde brought Uranus and Pluto back into orb of square aspect – a dynamic that highlighted 2012-2015 and is part of why so many people had extreme experiences and spiritual awakenings during those years! We have had these years to integrate and become used to these themes, which have something to do with radically breaking free from business as usual. There is a tension between the power of history/structures that have institutional power, and the future – what is coming in, what is vying for a place at the table. This is happening politically and internally. Internally, it would have to do with psychic structures that are historic to us, such as ancestral themes or patterns in our DNA, meeting the tension of what is new in us, in evolution, and how we are radically breaking free of limiting historic structures within ourselves. Alternatively, we may also be discovering which ancient or ancestral roots are energies we feel empowered by and wish to connect even more with.

Venus enters Sagittarius: 4:18 AM PDT

Venus will stay in Sagittarius until February 3, 2019.

  • Venus spent a long time in Scorpio because of the last Venus retrograde this fall – a lot of us really went through it! Major shifts in relationships occurred, including break-ups, new relationships, and getting back into contact with people from our past. Many of us experienced deaths in the form of a personal or relationship change – in some way the bottom dropped out and we spent some time in the dark, not knowing what was to come. Scorpio is a sign of transmutation, which in the full story arch always includes a rebirth after death. But that’s not what the death feels like when it’s actually happening. It was deep work for a lot of us. Ideally, we became more friendly with parts of our shadow or the shadows of others; forming relationships to these facets of life instead of abandoning them and being shocked by them whenever they rear their heads.

  • Venus entering Sagittarius may come as joyful, expansive change in scenery after so much underworld journeying in the realm of love and relationship. We also may more readily access wisdom and insight about how we and others have changed.

  • An important love language of Venus in Sagittarius is telling the truth – connecting over candor and authenticity, and allowing speaking the truth to alter one’s connections and destiny. Whenever we are not fully being honest, we are in a sense attempting to harmonize with reality without fully showing up. We may attract connections with others but they are attracted to an image we are projecting that is not entirely us. When we are honest, we begin to cultivate a more honest reflection around us in the form of our friends, communities, relationships, and even things like our aesthetic or where we choose to devote our energy and time.

Mercury in 4 Capricorn square Mars in 4 Aries: 3:04 AM PDT

(Image: Dorian Electra, shot from Man to Man)

The last time Mercury and Mars were in aspect, my housemates and I had some friends over and it felt like everyone was talking over each other. The verbal field felt combative. I could feel Mercury-Mars and I was irritated. After a little while I got up and went to my room without saying anything and I sat by myself and talked to myself and to my guides. When I came back downstairs, my roommates and friends had assembled themselves into a council space, where they were handing around a talking stone and only one person spoke at a time, speaking from their heart. I was so relieved and rejoined the circle. Everyone had felt what I was feeling, too. (And clearly I am blessed with amazing friends!)

  • Classically, when a hard aspect between Mercury and Mars comes around, we might find that conversations and communications appear more combative or competitive than usual. This is a debate signature. This also means though that people are feeling heated and energized by their ideas, and there is more energy behind them and the desire to share them. It may make it harder to be a good listener. With Venus also in Sagittarius, people might be very expressive of their opinions.

  • I shared the above anecdote to also illustrate that energies like forceful communication (Mercury-Mars) can also be channeled in positive ways. See if there are opportunities in your life this week to have more structured forms of communication (Mercury in Capricorn), where shared agreements make it easier. A solo version of that might be sitting down to write in a journal instead of just being in your head.

  • Mercury-Mars times are also good times to actively do things to soothe the nervous system, as we can be more likely to feel irritated. And again, this is also just spiked energy, which can be channeled!

Happy new year, and thank you for meditating on the planets with me this week! Please let me know what you think in the comments – truly I want to know so leave a note! I love you and you are tribe to me, thank you for finding your way to these words and resonating with them in whatever ways you have.
