“I am an excitable person who only understands life lyrically, musically, in whom feelings are much stronger as reason. I am so thirsty for the marvelous that only the marvelous has power over me. Anything I can not transform into something marvelous, I let go. Reality doesn’t impress me. I only believe in intoxication, in ecstasy, and when ordinary life shackles me, I escape, one way or another. No more walls.” – Anais Nin
Venus in Pisces and Mars in Gemini & the 2nd decan of Pisces and Gemini
Venus is in Pisces currently (she just entered January 26) and we can anticipate a rise in the good life – decadent meals, enchanted date nights, aesthetic inspiration, heart healing, and more along that vein. In the astrology community (especially among professional astrologers) this transit is widely celebrated. But even people who don’t know about Venus’ exaltation in Pisces can still feel a certain magic and lushness around this transit.
Venus is now approaching a square to Mars in Gemini, and this transit will exact on February 4 in 11 degrees of their signs. This places them each in the 2nd decan of their signs, and we can draw tarot correlations to the 9 of cups (2nd decan of Pisces) and 9 of swords (2nd decan of Gemini). If you don’t know what decans are, it’s simply that each zodiac sign is divided in 3 equal parts and there are different faces/nuances of each third of the sign.
These two associated tarot cards have very different emotional undertones. The second decan of Pisces and the 9 of cups relate to wish fulfillment, while the 9 of swords pictures a person up in the middle of the night, hands buried in their face, with anxiety.
Mars has been in Gemini for a long time due to the recent retrograde. I paid special attention to the time Mars was in the 2nd decan especially at the start of the retrograde when Mars was squaring Neptune. It would have been a time for us to learn that the mental fantasies we entertain and the way we interpret the events of our lives can seriously drain or depress us or can fill us up with greater vitality and joie de vivre, at either extreme.
Mars in Gemini brings a lot of oomph to our thoughts and the persuasiveness of our thoughts. But Gemini also has associations with the magician, the quality of life and reality shaping around our words through our “spells” and incantations.

Venus in Pisces square Mars in Gemini
Being an artist has taught me that life can always be beautiful, and that my capacity to see the frame or the moment as aesthetically striking is what drives my appraisal that life is beautiful — more than what is actually happening.
Venus in Pisces has this drive to see life as excessively beautiful. When Venus is transiting Pisces, we might too.
However, this energy (of wanting to see life as beautiful) is squaring off with an intensified mental energy of Mars in Gemini, who can be spinning any story any which way.
It’s possible that we are currently experiencing overtones or moments of feeling dis-enchanted with life because we think it should be different – we wish we were somewhere else, we miss another chapter of our life that felt more appealing than this current one, we generally wish our circumstances were different.
While sometimes this discontent can be a driver to change our lives – it doesn’t actually feel good to feel disconnected from our own lives.
If we can find the artistic inspiration to see our current life experience as worthy of portraiture (literally or metaphorically), worthy of breathing in, worthy of telling stories about, as beautiful… than we situate ourselves more closely both to an accessible paradise (via perception) as well as the appropriate intimacy with our lives to actually start heading in the direction of greater pleasure and esteem. We might even be surprised at the intensity (Mars) at which we can perceive and experience beauty when that is what we set our “spells” too.
This chapter, this frame, this current reality is beautiful
It can be a current struggle or gravitational pull right now with this transit to try to separate ourselves from our current experience by not having esteem in it. We feel anxious or discontent that our life isn’t what we want it to be. We can easily locate blame mentally as to what traps us inside of a less-than-ideal life.
Personally I believe that art is not just as a specific product we create but a way of life. And to be under Venus’ influence is to be an artist, whether or not we really identify as an artist or a creative. Being artistic or creative with our lives in an overarching way is a way to connect more deeply (connection is also Venus) with ourselves and with everything. Venus in Pisces is also correlated to that feeling of Oneness.
There is a subtle pattern by which we will choose to disconnect from ourselves and from our lives (to varying degrees) because we don’t like it right now. We think that if our external circumstances get better or are more aligned with our preferences, we will feel more connected and joyful.
However, if we were to approach our current circumstances and state of being as a canvas & set of raw materials, and ourselves as artists, we might find more enlivening ways to relate with what currently is.
Can change for the better still happen if I accept what is?
We fear acceptance because to accept something we don’t like right now might spiral into some kind of complacency. We think that our inner-judge or inner-persecutor is protecting us from falling into the web of failure.
However, acceptance is a necessary step in the process of emotional transformation. Acceptance is where we soften our resistance that is holding us in the web of the ‘problem’ itself.
LOVING what is is an additional Venus in Pisces excess I imagine we can afford in a lot more places right now 😉
I see a main fear of Venus in Pisces square Mars in Gemini as the idea that life will not be fulfilling or that it is not, for some reason, but within that there is a deeper longing for pleasure and connection. And while we may be convinced that it is our circumstances itself that are the cause of our discontent, we actually have a lot of power to be more romantic in our thinking and from there, access a greater field of play and beauty & the archetypal good life.
🥂 to the pursuit of the good life,
