Venusian Descent: Astrology of 11/18 – 11/24

Venus in Libra squares Saturn in Capricorn this week, just before Venus enters depth-oriented Scorpio. This is a little bit of a crunch, but I’ll offer a few different ways it could go so you may take part in choosing! Keep reading below or watch the video version of this forecast on YouTube here.

On one level, the heart may be discontent. The Venus-Saturn square brings up awareness of what is not up to standard, and this brings up some desire to shift or control our relationships and the outer world. This then transitions into a swampy Venus in Scorpio mood where we are giving our power away to other people and to circumstances by not actually claiming our own power and accountability in the situation. We feel powerless and like we have to ‘get’ things from life and from other people.

At a higher level, we might be tuning into ways we are out of alignment with some of our deeper values, or we’re not feeling a resonance with the circumstances in our lives. It takes a certain level of personal maturity to be aware of this information without needing to feel like someone must be blamed. There is no need to berate oneself or others. The situation is what it is. The question moving forward is, how can we be more empowered in cultivating what we value into our lives? Then, when Venus dives into the underworldly sign of Scorpio, introspection and inner-discovery could be a key to empowerment. We might shed layers of ourselves that played along with those circumstances we didn’t like.

If all the world’s a stage, and all people merely players, consider that it is not just the bright lucid will of the conscious mind that drives us in these dramas we live! We are complex beings with workings mysterious to ourselves. Shadow work is powerful because it involves taking accountability for deeper and deeper layers of the self, which allows us to see the root of certain conflicts or patterns in our lives.

This week as we notice a dissonance between what we desire versus what is, that can be a gateway to asking deeper questions about ourselves. How are we already relating to the situation? Are there places we can be more honest with ourselves? Where do we feel powerless and have believed that story – and how does that influence the way that we engage? What would it be like to take accountability for aspects of ourselves that we have not?

At yet another level, we may be feeling a deep amount of esteem for ourselves and the lives we’ve cultivated as we see ourselves honoring what we’ve committed to and making progress along the way, however we define that. Saturn isn’t only about compression and boundaries after all. It is also about accomplishment! And sometimes it is true that we’re simply proud of ourselves for how far we’ve come.

Level Two Training for Alumni!

Introducing a new program for alumni of the Evolutionary Astrology Intensive (a level two training)! METEORITE is an Astrological Embodiment Accelerator, a deep nine-month dive into building skill and voice as astrologers. Expanding on what we’ve already learned in the intensive, we will practice our interpretive and delineation skills, continue to explore the transpersonal mysteries of the outer planets, work with the material of our own charts and transits, and create something (a work of astrological scholarship or art) by the end of the nine months to share with everyone. Call it an initiation.

Astrology has always been so fun and magical to me but also something I see as worth being dedicated about, which means training! There are many hours that go into studying, practicing, and then there are also the attunements of how to live astrologically (how to track the transits, how to evolve your expression of your natal placements in daily life, discovering learning opportunities everywhere like getting in the habit of looking up the natal charts of actors when you watch films, etc.) – so let’s develop skill and interpretive acumen in community. This is a space for astrological devotion, and for bringing this practice into earth – i.e. materializing it and making it a reality. Open to alumni, with potential special exceptions to people well-versed in Evolutionary Astrology. Learn more and apply here.

Astrology Reading Bookings FULL: I am booked out for a little bit, but still taking new clients for ongoing mentorship/coaching (6 month – 1 year commitment). If you’re interested in working with me in that capacity, send me an email at sabrina@monarchastrology.com. And make sure you’re on my mailing list if you’d like to be informed of when my books open again!

New episode of Magic of the Spheres! I interviewed Jo Gleason about Jupiter in Capricorn, in retrospect. We discussed the nature of this alignment and the philosophy/complications of hard work. Jo brought in some storytelling for this episode that I feel really evokes the wintery, grave feeling of Jupiter in Capricorn as well as its offering, like the magic of choosing hope.

2020 has been characterized by a lineup of planets in Capricorn. We had the great Saturn-Pluto conjunction on January 12, 2020, and have been feeling the impact/fallout of that moment all year. Saturn-Pluto transits relate to major historical contractions. But we’ve also had Jupiter in Capricorn, amplifying the Saturn-Pluto dynamic as Jupiter expands what it touches.

In traditional/hellenistic astrology, Jupiter is in it’s fall in Capricorn – Jo brings some insight to this concept in this episode, referring to planets in fall or detriment as “not conventionally resourced”. When you think of what Jupiter intends to accomplish in of itself, and what Capricorn represents, you can imagine the friction here. Basically put – Jupiter is a planet of abundance and expansion, while Capricorn relates to boundaries, limits, and responsibility. We explore in this episode what would have been more difficult this last year versus what was more supported.

Jupiter will enter Aquarius on December 19, 2020. Saturn was in Aquarius for a brief while this year, but retrograded back into Capricorn. Saturn will also re-enter Aquarius in December, and Jupiter and Saturn will form a conjunction in Aquarius on the winter solstice, December 21, 2020. But before we move on, we look back – as Capricorn would!

Here’s our week:

November 18, 2020

Sun in 27 Scorpio sextile Saturn in 27 Capricorn: 11:18 PM PST

(Image: Josh Courlas)

  • This is days after a New Moon in Scorpio, and at the moment of this transit the Moon is exactly conjunct Pluto in 22 degrees of Capricorn. There can be a mood/theme here around paring down, or having a more deeply intentional standard around what we invite into our lives.
  • What creativity do you allow yourself around endings? Grief and ceremony go together. Ritual can help us traverse threshold moments, or even just to hold and honor them if it takes a long time.

Venus in 27 Libra square Saturn in 27 Capricorn: 3:29 AM PST

  • The first image that came to me for this one was being at a beautiful villa, vacation home, retreat, or party, where the environment itself is so beautiful that everything about the evening takes on this extra magical glow. Saturn relates to structure and container, and Venus how we experience pleasure. The emphasis and results from “set and setting” in psychedelic journeying vivifies the relationship we have with any given environment and its conditions.
  • The dynamic square contact of these two planets can relate to assessment and judgement about the containers we are a part of – from the way we have set up our homes, to our relationships, to more subtle things within our experience like how we plate a meal or the way we treat our clothes (crumpled in a corner somewhere, or nicely hung up?). It is possible to feel a special sense of satisfaction that comes from feeling that the beauty in our lives possesses some ceremony, or that we took part in creating that ceremony.
  • Be mindful of the tendency to delay connection and enjoyment because there is still something that needs to be ‘fixed’ or completed. I wish I could remember where I got this image so I could credit the author but I read something one time that was a metaphor about a couple in a house whose house heating is broken. They can either direct their energy toward fixing the bigger problem (the heating) before they allow themselves to drop in and connect, or they could make a fire in the fireplace and warm themselves by it in the immediate meantime. The author was arguing that there are often bigger issues within a relationship that need to be addressed but take time, and people can find ways to stay connected along the way of reconciling larger issues – instead of waiting for resolution as a condition for connection. Venus-Saturn can have a harsh edge where we might tend to block ourselves from experiencing appreciation unless the situation is up to a particular standard – all the while, we negatively condition our lives in the process by spending so much time with a shut-down heart. The art is maintaining longer term goals around excellence (if one is so ambitious) AND to enjoy the way there.
  • We can feel conflicted, however, where our values more intensely differ from what is concretely real in our experience. Shut-down can be felt in relationship if one person has a desire or need that the other has no desire to empathize with or entertain.
  • Venus-Saturn also brings up the harder elements of love and relationship, as well as devotion. What kind of range do we possess for being present with ourselves, and others? How do we cultivate ethical behavior in our lives in a way that honors our relationships?
  • Venus-Saturn reminds me of bell hooks’ concept of having a love ethic. She writes, “I know no one who has embraced a love ethic whose life has not become more joyous and more fulfilling. The widespread assumption that ethical behavior takes the fun out of life is false. In actuality, living ethically ensures that relationships in our lives, including encounters with strangers, nurture our spiritual growth. Behaving unethically, with no thought to the consequences of our actions, is a bit like eating tons of junk food. While it may taste good, in the end the body is never really adequately nourished and remains in a constant state of lack and longing. Our souls feel this lack when we act unethically, behaving in ways that diminish our spirits and dehumanize others.”

Venus enters Scorpio: 5:22 AM PST

Venus will stay in Scorpio until December 15.

  • Venus in Scorpio, as well as Venus in aspect to Pluto (similar energies), relates to Beauty and the Beast dynamics. This can be attraction to underworldly, mysterious, complicated, powerful, and/or dangerous types. It is the desire to transform with one’s love and to be transformed by love. It is the intensified power exchange that can occur in love when the people who come together are intensely different from one another from the start, each possessing something that the other doesn’t have a lot of access to within themselves. Thus the desire to be transformed by one another creates a glue and a chemistry between them, yet also rampant potential for projection, possessiveness, and manipulation.
  • If we speak of the individual’s hero’s journey, we think of a character who has pursued their destiny and been challenged and strengthened by obstacles along the way. I think of Venus relating to a similar journey, but the overarching theme is self-worth. Rather than adventures out in the world per se, the adventures are particular relationships, where the protagonist meets characters who represent a part of themselves they have not yet owned, or characters who *bring out* a part of of the hero that they have not yet cultivated fully within themselves.
  • At an alchemical level, we could consider the implications of continuing to feel attracted to certain types of people. What attracts us to that type? It is usually not obvious to us.
  • No matter what epic scenes happen in the relationships we encounter (say if we are drawn to these more intense kinds of relationships), it is our inner recognition of our patterns that places that we are unconscious or where we leak power that are going to greatly transform the quality of our relationships. By pursuing psychological wisdom, studying archetypes, and/or being deeply self aware about our own attractions and motives, we can become more lucid about the unconscious patterns we project into our relationships, and we also become more empowered to create healthier or more reciprocal/fruitful relationships that are more about consensual collaboration and honest communication/boundaries rather than power games, manipulation, and extraction (trying to “get” something from each other).

Sun enters Sagittarius: 12:40 PM PST

The Sun will stay in Sagittarius until December 21 (which is the big day that Jupiter and Saturn form a conjunction in Aquarius!).

  • We leave the intrigue and depth-orientation of Scorpio Season to the larger-than-life adventurousness of Sagittarius Season (albeit with Venus and Mercury in Scorpio at this time). While Scorpio is prone toward obsession and investigation, Sagittarius likes to ‘stay above’ it. Through philosophy, through belief, or through direct experience that informs our beliefs, we may encounter perspectives that give us levity in the face of whatever is happening. At a lower level, this levity is inauthentic and compensatory when the depths have never really been faced, but simply avoided. The philosophies and worldviews we form where we have faced our own shadow and continue to, however — tend to be more well-rounded.
  • Sagittarius, a sign of travel, also relates to mental/perceptual travel that can occur when we entertain new ideas or are exposed to new worldviews. There can be a desire to feel wowed and in awe of the vastness, goodness, and magic of life. If we don’t currently feel this inspiration, Sagittarius Season is a great time to contact it. Consider the spirit of adventure and how you can connect with that now – it is a creative impetus of the Sun in this sign.

Mercury in 18 Scorpio trine Neptune retrograde in 18 Pisces: 8:40 PM PST

  • It is like there is endless, vast, depths to swim in with this transit – introspection might feel bottomless and memories continue to recreate and open up new dimensions of themselves each time we recall them. The mind becomes like a washing machine spin cycle. If you encounter this try to let it be humbling, healing, and dissolving. This transit can be very fluid for inner-exploration, creativity, and flow arts – perhaps a little more frustrating wherever we are trying to be in control or be super orderly. If there is something you must get done attentively and you are not zen-surfing the wave, give your mind breaks.

Thank you for meditating on the planets with me this week! If you would like further guidance, I have been increasingly focused on longer-term 1:1 work with my students and clients, in the form of mentorship – helping people form a depth relationship to their natal chart and personal transits over time, to develop themselves, to heal, and to reach their goals, all through the soul-making lens of evolutionary astrology. If you’re interested in working together in that capacity, I am currently accepting new clients. Send me an email at sabrina@monarchastrology.com to start a conversation and set up a free consultation call.
