Rooted Effervescence: Astrology of 4/28 – 5/4

Mercury in Taurus aspects Neptune, Pluto, and Jupiter on its way out of Taurus and into Gemini at the end of the week. With Mercury in Gemini, the mental/communicative field is about to get a lot lighter – Gemini brings a sudden brightness, such as the way we feel when we are truly curious about something or truly intrigued in a body of research and we just want to know everything about it. Gemini represents the external/yang form of Mercury (with Virgo as internal/yin) meaning it is our desire to pick up information from the environment around us. We find God (if you look at it that way) as we wander our neighborhood or local area, and drop into conversations with the people we are coming into contact with. I like to think of Gemini as a casual oracle – the way a book or a friend says just the thing you needed to hear, and it catalyzed a magical series of events from that light bubbly moment of an arousing idea.

But before Mercury enters Gemini, Mercury in Taurus forms aspects to two mystical outer planets and the expansive planet Jupiter. This sequence of events gives me the image of a person who meditates or practices visualization in their own home before stepping out into the world to experience the new reality that has clicked into place to mirror their inner-opening.

Mercury in Taurus highlights the focus or attention we can bring to what is here in our physical bodies, tracking how we respond to anything external as information more about ourselves than it is about what stimulated it. The internal-journalist of Mercury in Taurus is the journal writer, the person note-taking their impressions. It is noticing what parts of our bodies respond to subtleties or stimulations from life, and the quality of those sensations, and following the thread of those sensations even deeper by noticing them and being with them as they move and unfurl.

The psychopomp side of Mercury in Taurus finds hidden truths or parts of our shadow in our tactile, sensual experience, and is able to be curious about it without judging it. A magician side of Mercury in Taurus learns various somatic and energetic practices to self-regulate the nervous system or get into particular feeling states on purpose.

So the promise of the astrology, should you choose to play with it, is that in being intimate with ourselves – noticing our inner-subtleties and really being with our body and the body-psyche – will set the fertile ground for new awarenesses to spring up with a vibrancy that reflects the depth of where we’ve travelled.

In the spirit of Taurus, it’s also worth noting how slow this sign is. Developing intimacy with ourselves also includes not forcing our own opening or pushing ourselves past our range. It is just being with what is, with loving attention, and tending to the way our story naturally wants to unfold, listening inward for the inspiration & natural inner-Eros that compels our very evolution.

I interviewed Kirah @thestrology about her work on mapping out the astrology of your 20’s up to the first Saturn return around age 28 or 29. In this episode we explore transits that everyone has in this season of life, as well as the annual profections occurring during the 20’s (a Hellenistic technique). This is a chills-inducing & illuminating retrospective if you’ve already gone through it, or a series of helpful signposts if you’re in it! ✨ Tune in where you listen to podcasts! Or on your browser here.

Forthcoming fiction novel: The Garden of Sleeping Hammers will be coming out late spring of this year! I’ve shared a reading of the first two chapters on a recent Magic of the Spheres episode, which you can listen to here. Thank you to Alex Maune @chthonicbacchae for the cover artwork, and Liina Koivula @local.smoke.press for the text on the cover and helping me design/format the book behind the scenes.

Here’s our week:

April 29, 2021

Mercury in 22 Taurus sextile Neptune in 22 Pisces: 7:27 PM PDT

(Image: Faustine and the Beautiful Summer, 1972)

  • Mercury harmonizes with Neptune in two signs that are dreamy and pleasure-oriented. Taurus finds bliss in the material, and Pisces accesses bliss states in the imaginative and spiritual realm. This transit could be a good moment to check in with how much we have allowed ourselves to become externally-focused as opposed to in touch with our inner realm and sitting in our creative power.
  • External focus is when we are concerned with how something looks, what other people are doing, what is happening in the world, and so on. If we are not mindful, we can leak our power and mental peace this way — behaving in a way that we think is strategic according to what’s happening on the outside, as opposed to being in touch with what is truly emerging inside of us. Or being overly concerned about other people’s behavior and how we feel in reaction to it, as opposed to being so familiar and empowered in our internal landscape that we decide how we feel and aren’t so bothered or triggered by others. External focus can look like trying to manage what’s happening on the outside, instead of truly care of our basic inner needs.
  • Internal focus relates to the process of creating our reality from the inside. Instead of adjusting our internal temperature to what is happening all around us, we set a temperature. This is a basic premise with attraction/magnetic magic.
  • Make a point to remove yourself from excess external stimulation (like media, other people’s thoughts, etc.) and perhaps find a peaceful environment like a setting in your home or somewhere outdoors and tune in with your own energy. The following suggestion may be harder to do if you are in an active state of trauma, but if you have the capacity: see if you can create a blissful state in your own being or tune into a particular emotional energetic that you want to feel. You may notice that when you return to the rest of the world, things have changed subtly. That’s because the external world is always mirroring our internal state. When we get lost in the mirror, we stop being creators. But when we are creators, we get to experience reality mirroring the energetic choices we’ve made, whether these changes show up quickly or take time to accumulate.
  • Being in touch with our interior opens up new and inspired ways to engage the world around us. Imagine the difference in how we show up when we are actually great friends with ourselves.

Mercury in 26 Taurus trine Pluto retrograde in 26 Capricorn: 2:19 AM PDT

(Image: Giorgio de Chirico)

  • This may be a time to become more aware of when we are having value judgments. Some shadow dynamics of Pluto in Capricorn include being unaware at the degree to which we are judging (simply thinking we are being factual), and seeking to control others or gain others compliance when we believe we are right and others must conform to our law. Pluto in Capricorn can also host our projections about authority and our reticence to actually embody our own authority because of our stories of what authority means. So if we tune into our value judgements as they arise, we get a look at the kinds of stories we are telling ourselves.
  • If we follow the thread of a value judgement to ask what kind of truth it is revealing about a need or desire that we have, there may be some transformative potential here.

Venus in 22 Taurus sextile Neptune in 22 Pisces: 3:39 PM PDT

  • There could be some opening here in our relationship with all things Venusian: sensuality, love, pleasure, beauty, money, music, art, etc. Venus in Taurus making a harmonious aspect to Neptune in Pisces is a very expansive field – one where perhaps, we could experience a dissolving around some of our blocks toward being in relationship. We sense our body more, we feel music more, we notice another’s bid for connection in a way we might have not picked up before, we feel more welcoming. We may also feel more approval for our truth when it comes to our true desires, and feel more approval for being authentic in that way, really honoring our yes and no.

Mercury in 28 Taurus square Jupiter in 28 Aquarius: 2:33 AM PDT

  • The astrology has been significantly airy lately, with Saturn and Jupiter in Aquarius, and Mars just having spent some time in Gemini (now in Cancer). With air, comes ideas, and lots of them! Jupiter in Aquarius and Mercury in Taurus form a first quarter square with Jupiter in a relatively more stationary position than Mercury (Mercury moves faster). This dynamic can elude to a necessity at this moment to ground SOME idea (of the many) into a concrete act or direction. Having so many options or ideas is at once wonderful (abundance!) but also sometimes a place we get stuck, endlessly thinking but not concretizing any of it. Mercury in Taurus forming this square is an excellent indicator that something can be pinned to earth right now. It will necessarily not be every single idea that is floating in space right now, but just tune into what you can give life to, and go from there.

  • Ranging from melancholic to idealistic, this transit is the mood of a solo philosopher or writer/artist at a desk, contacting thoughts and visions that will one day speak to masses of people, though they are either ‘ahead of their time’ or it will take time to reach that kind of audience. The depth of the vision is felt in the body. It is compelling enough to devote time and space to giving life to it – even if that process is at times lonely or painstaking.
  • This transit could relate to a process where our attention is limited and focused to some project or endeavor at hand. Are we resisting this, or facilitating it? And when we find ourselves in a meaningful creative container (we’re clear on our commitment or our ‘why’), we get to experience the slow, profound pleasure of giving life to a tangible form, allowing inspiration to channel through us and into what we are building.

Mercury enters Gemini: 7:49 PM PDT

  • Embodied knowings and intimations have been coming through with Mercury in Taurus – they have been felt, tactile, inward. These knowings may have been intricately connected to our own symbol system, our own inner landscape of memory or direct sensation. Mercury moving into Gemini suggests a new capacity to verbalize what has been emergent within our interior. Gemini relates to fluency, quickness, wit, and the capacity for translation. It is a very social sign that can more or less predict how others will receive messages, or how to deliver a message to a particular person or audience in a way we can anticipate it will be received. There can be an enormous potential here for building bridges.
  • On the other hand, being so aware of how to communicate with others can correlate with a kind of co-dependency in which we only say the things that will ensure we fit in or conform to the current narrative or story, or we sacrifice authenticity for what we imagine to be relatable. Gemini is also a magician that can be curious and create new open-ended conversations. Gemini has an endless capacity to bring forth new angles to any situation, mutating any simple vision into a multifaceted diamond. This mental effervescence can surface social frictions, but who says dogma or limited thinking or conformity is any better? A key to this mercurial season may be mental adaptability, openness, and at deep levels of magic, neuroplasticity.
  • Mindset shifts don’t just give us the capacity to re-interpret what is already statically in our environment — it changes the quantum field of what IS in our environment, as well as what magical doorways we even notice exist (or pop into existence), and are open enough to walk through.
  • Notice opportunities for curiosity (asking questions when you don’t know something) and leaning into curiosity instead of defaulting to assumption. This is one way that Gemini opens doors!
