This week we are changing gears as both Mercury and Pluto leave retrograde. Both of these planets are in earth signs, so new momentum on the earth plane is set in motion – think work, ambition, accumulation of wealth, the health of the body, and tangible goals. The Saturn-Neptune cycle and the eclipses in Virgo and Pisces have had us dealing with issues around delusion and clarity; giving up wishful thinking and moving into a more pragmatic orientation to our dreams. The interplay between fantasy and reality is easily confusing and requires some fine-tuning, but one way I like to think about it is that when it feels like the Universe is against us or we somehow feel disempowered with all that is, we’re just out of alignment. We’re not here to suffer and we’re capable of the extraordinary. If we want to manifest our dreams and ideals, we can study cause and effect and see what is really being asked of us at any given moment. Truly doing this requires us to let go of beliefs that crystallize our realities in ways that don’t serve us.
Mercury stations direct in Virgo on the 21st at 10:31 PM PST, and it will be closely conjunct the North Node, and squaring Saturn in Sagittarius. The experience of unlocking a tangible realization of one’s vision has been activated through the Virgo dimension of life. With Neptune and the South Node in Pisces making up the other part of this axis, it has been a call to actively show up for the process unconditionally, in faith that positive results will manifest. The dream has been on the horizon, maybe for some painfully far away and with longing, or it has been this sense of longing that is a motivator for getting organized and getting on track. This transit allows progress to be magically mechanistic – movement and energy tangibly being freed up: getting the job offer, getting an important phone call, something important set in motion as a result of showing up for errands, chores, our to-do lists, health maintenance, and the like. It is trusting that a desirable future awaits and not waiting for the confirmation of that to show up for paving the way for it. Part of the unconditionality of this involves finding intrinsic satisfaction in the process – if this is not possible, it points to there being some kind of need to restructure or realign the mundane realm. It’s been a process of figuring out what really works, rather than just hoping things will get better without actually doing anything about it. There is a difference between leisure and relaxing or clearing one’s mind, and totally abandoning the issue at hand. It can take a magnifying glass for some of these solutions, as a person could be escaping their need to address something by over-indulging in a method of controlling a symptom. This creates crisis, which creates opening to address the root. And we can in many situations circumvent the need for crisis by addressing things at a depth level where we are capable.

If you feel or see things operating below the surface, this would be a good time to take care of them where applicable. Pluto, which rules the undercurrents (the psychic Underworld, the unconscious, the shadow, and the primordial forces of creation from which the sex-death-rebirth cycles descend to and are born anew from) – is stationing direct on the 26th. It went retrograde on April 18 of this year, so think upon any deep changes in your being that have occurred since that time.
Mercury in Virgo is trining Pluto this week (exact on the 23rd), so a conversation between the surface information and the deeper storylines are naturally very available. This is a transit that is great for depth insights, or touching root to new depths in an expressive medium of choice. We might also come up to a wall where there is a need for some different approach or a transmutation of energy. From a writer I am adoring/reading currently, Maggie Nelson:
“One thing they don’t tell you ‘bout the blues when you got ‘em, you keep fallin’ cause there ain’t no bottom,” sings Emmylou Harris, and she may be right. Perhaps it would help to be told that there is no bottom, save, as they say, wherever and whenever you stop digging. You have to stand there, spade in hand, cold whiskey sweat beaded on your brow, eyes misshapen and wild, some sorry-ass grave digger grown down-tired of the trade. You have to stand there in the dirty rut you dug, alone in the darkness, in all its pulling quiet, surrounding by the scandal of corpses.” – Bluets
The negative proclivities of Mercury in Virgo trine Pluto could literally be endless, so it is no better to follow the trail to the end, than it is to engage in a transmutation of that energy. It could be switching gears – doing yoga or taking a bath, finding some way to change and attend to the energy present without stuffing it away or band-aiding it, but actually changing its form. This is depth content surfacing that requires a container (Capricorn) – you can suffer in the “dirty rut” or you can construct another container to deal with whatever is coming up. This transit correlates with an organized environment leading to an organized mind or a more elevated state of consciousness. Make your ambiance for best results – Virgo can be a finicky energy but settles with surprising grace when the alignment is found.
The Sun enters Libra on the 22nd, heightening the aesthetic and social dimensions of life. With Jupiter also recently in Libra, the Sun will conjunct Jupiter this week on the 25th. This connects beauty, aesthetic, relating to others and balance with personal vitality and radiance.
Venus will enter Scorpio on the 23rd and Mars enters Capricorn on the 27th. This is a very sexy Mars/Venus. (Moving from Venus in Libra and Mars in Sagittarius). This combination here is really deepening in intensity. Libra and Sagittarius together has been more about exploring, adventure and freedom, while Scorpio and Capricorn together bring in more elements of focus, drive, fixation, and commitment. There is now more emphasis on what it is you really want – and what you will put in motion to get it. Mars in Capricorn is a highly executive energy, and Venus in Scorpio is very in tune with desire.

Mars in Capricorn favors action plans, ambition, setting in motion goals that will take time to achieve, ambition that takes you to a new height, realistic and/or structured gameplans. While Mars in Sagittarius is a very energetic placement, it can be scattered or somewhat indiscriminate. Mars in Capricorn is chiseled in its direction and bend. It also favors self-discipline, you may think of the way that a warrior or martial artist has practiced a discipline or form, rather than just exhibiting raw brute energy. The way we apply ourselves and direct our will at this time may be skillful and orderly in some way. Many astrologers would say that Mars likes being in Capricorn. It’s a formidable placement. It will be in the sign of Capricorn until November 8. Mars has a power here of setting boundary.
Venus in Scorpio (until October 18) favors personal magnetism and connecting to how one is desirable. This will amplify the unseen undercurrents involved in attraction. Concerns of trust, secrecy, and the validity of privacy can arise.
Scorpio is correlated with the Soul and things that unfold at the Soul level – the principle behind Evolutionary Astrology is that everything we experience is a reflection of the Soul and our collected impressions that make up our internal reality. Scorpio is the sign most associated with sex and sexuality, and has a definite mystique and magnetism to it that characterizes the sign. When Venus is in Scorpio, we can experience desire more intensely, which can be good or bad depending on whether we’re receiving or getting what it is we want. Neediness can also be a theme, but so can experiencing new levels of self-empowerment. That can depend on our willingness to let go and experience change. The point with Mars in Capricorn and Venus in Scorpio together may be really about personal power: what is that we are aiming ourselves toward, and what and who are we exchanging energy with? Is it holistic or mutually beneficial, or are we draining ourselves or others?
Venus and Mars in these signs can help us to advance forward and evolve, and the lower tendencies would be power games and manipulation. If one can become magnetic, rather than need to play games or practice some kind of extraction, that would be a virtue of Scorpio, and Mars in Capricorn can supply a vital force behind the action plan for one’s endeavors. If a boost in confidence is something you’re after, both of these planetary positions certainly offer that potential.
