The Psychopomp: Astrology of 10/17 – 10/23

Mercury in Scorpio continues the work of the psychopomp this week – traveling through the underworld and forming contacts to Neptune, Mars and Pluto; retrieving insights and gems from the deeper waters and undercurrents of our surface lives. The Sun enters Scorpio later in the week and immediately forms an opposition to Uranus in Taurus, signifying the potential for radical transformation and radical bursts of insight.

To borrow a maxim from Evolutionary Astrology about Pluto (ruler of Scorpio), there is no way out but through. If we are experiencing patterns we would like to transform, we have to personally see them out and we also have to personally invest that same lifeforce in something more empowering. Self-knowledge about what attracts and repels us, where we are compulsive versus where we are in our power, will all assist graceful passage this week.

It is helpful to become aware of your deep feelings because they are part of a transformational process that we are all going through. Why suppress what you can transform? If you are courageous, and like Mercury – able to pick up information while also keeping a distance that lets you shake it all away when the journey is complete – you might simply step out of your own way and watch yourself transform. The transits are supporting it.

Join me in January 2019 for a 15-week intensive course to learn the fundamentals and practice of Evolutionary Astrology – a soul-based practice that will allow you to gain a narrative perspective on where your soul is coming from (prior life dynamics) and what are your lessons and sources of empowerment in this life. When we deeply know ourselves, we are freed from unconscious patterns which may hinder our more conscious direction and intentions. Getting to know the soul using the map of astrology is like tending to the garden of your life from the very roots. Read more about the course and enroll here.

  • As Mercury in Scorpio alone could attest, the mind and the emotions are not clearly divided faculties – each influence the other. Certain ideas will inspire different emotions, and certain frameworks of thought will provide maps for going into deeper emotional territory than others. The emotional mind is highlighted under this transit though mental clarity is not necessarily present. It may be important for the mind & rationalizing faculty to literally calm down and allow the waves to come and influence consciousness as they may. Reflection and insight can result, but hopefully we have been duly regenerated and nourished by deeper emotional channels than what our egos’ normal sailing encounters.

  • The degree to which we cannot understand our own experience is the degree to which we are on the edge. There is harmonious support here to gain information and intelligence from being on the edge.

“The eminent psychologist C.G. Jung, in his studies of alchemy, often quotes the ancient alchemist dictum: tertium non datur, which means that the third factor (which alone can resolve the problem of opposites and personal conflicts) is not given. Jung goes on to explain that a conflict is never resolved on the same level where it arises, but can be resolved only on a higher level, based on a higher perspective and level of consciousness.” – Stephen Arroyo in Astrology, Karma & Transformation

  • As some reaction or counterbalance to the emotional sensitivity of this time period, there may be some drive to get out of the emotions altogether – to rationalize or get a higher view. In some cases this can be liberating, such as discovering a solution to a crisis in which the solution only exists outside of it and not in the mud the problem was born in. In other cases it could just be defensive. Either way, we may work through the tensions of being in our emotions versus attaining higher consciousness about these emotions to be able to better address them.

Mercury in 18 Scorpio sextile Pluto in 18 Capricorn: 12:13 PM PDT

  • We often gain peaks of insight and understanding on things as they or dying or just after they have died: like lucidly realizing the essence of a person who has just passed. More subtly, when patterns and ego structures we possess are turning over and are ready for transformation, they may suddenly be more accessible and definable in our consciousness. We may find ourselves able to identify and speak about patterns in ourselves which were before operating on a subconscious level. Collectively, societies are doing the same thing: verbalizing and processing previously unconscious social assumptions and structures.

  • If you are really seeking change and transformation (and it’s not just happening on its own accord with these Scorpio energies LOL), perhaps seek understanding as your gateway. What is left unprocessed from your past? It’s worth knowing, because those impressions tint our perception and subtly hinder freedom in the present moment.

Sun enters Scorpio: 4:22 AM PDT

The Sun enters Scorpio right into an opposition with Uranus in Taurus and is just a few days away from a conjunction to retrograde Venus in Scorpio. That conjunction is one of my personal favorite astrological events to observe and/or create Venusian ritual around, because it marks one point of Venus and the Earth’s five-pointed star orbital pattern. Just so you can be ready, that conjunction will happen October 26 at 7:16 AM PDT!

  • This transit marks a time of encountering and resolving inner-tensions we have around our capacity to transform ourselves and our capacity to live an authentic life. Check into where you are experiencing (and/or creating) polarity in your life, like thinking you can only be financially stable if you work a job you don’t truly feel called to (and will be poor if you follow your calling) or thinking that you can have an exciting love life OR a safe and comfortable love life but not both, etc. It is time to be free of these binding and polarizing tensions, but probably not without some kind of process or spark of insight that sets us free. We will need different points of view and perhaps the reflections and counsel of others who might see something we can’t.

Thank you for meditating on the planets with me this week! Please let me know what you think in the comments and share this article with your friends. If you’re getting the itch to study astrology and you’d like to study directly with me and a group of likeminds, I’d love to have you in my upcoming intensive course in January. You’ll learn the foundations for understanding Evolutionary Astrology and learn how to read charts from the perspective of the soul. Looking at the chart this way means gaining a narrative for where a soul is coming from in prior lives and what they are working on in this life. Having this meditation for yourself is an amazing way to understand who you deeply are and how you are called to show up in this lifetime; how your very circumstances do support your path.
